His father was Edward Godwin (1833-1886), a talented architect, furniture and costume designer.

Edward Gordon Craig was registered at birth as Edward William Godwin, but later both he and his sister adopted the surname Craig, after an island rock called Ailsa Craig seen on a holiday to Scotland.

In 1888 he was christened Edward (after his father) Henry (after Henry Irving) Gordon (after his godmother Lady Lucy Duff Gordon) Craig.
